Bedgrove Junior School

‘Learning for our Future’

Long Term Overview

Through a diverse and exciting curriculum we aim to instill a lifelong love of learning. Bedgrove Junior School pupils will develop core skills in the subject areas of English and Mathematics, whilst broadening their knowledge and skills in the broader curriculum subjects such as history, geography,ICT, music and French . With the introduction of the new primary curriculum in September 2014, we have worked hard to develop a curriculum which is dynamic, broad, balanced and innovative to ensure that the children enjoy a practical, fun and challenging learning experience that will prepare them for life in the 21st Century Britain. Our aim is for children to be able to enjoy a range of sporting activities, have the opportunity to learn new musical instruments as well as taking advantage of our fantastic facilities, including the sports field, kitchen, refurbished library, well-resourced music room, iPads, kindles and vast outdoor space.

Our pupils receive daily maths (including an extra specific arithmetic session each week) and english lessons alongside guided reading, handwriting, spelling and grammar sessions across the week. Pupils also receive two hours of PE, three hours of topic learning, two hours of science and an hour of ICT, French/Music and Healthy Minds. Pupils in Year 5 also do one hour of swimming per week. At the end of each day pupils have story time (using the Pie Corbett literature spine) and on a Friday they have 20 minutes of enrichment time.  All of our topics or english units are launched with a 'hook' or WOW day to engage the pupils in their learning. RE is taught through half-termly focus days where we learn about a specific religion.
